Mimosa, the yellow gold of the Mediterranean

Numerous themed walks allow visitors to wander along the paths of the Domaine du Rayol. In winter, the mimosa trail is undoubtedly the most emblematic Mediterranean walk on the French Riviera. These golden pompons that brighten the hills of the Riviera and the Var along the famous Mimosa Route also bloom here, at the heart of the Australian garden from which the tree originates. Since the 20th century, these majestic winter blossoms—celebrated each year from seaside resorts to inland villages—have become an integral part of the Mediterranean landscape.

The Hôtel de la Mer: a vestige of 20th-century seaside architecture

At the entrance to the estate, a reminder of the region’s seaside heritage, the Hôtel de la Mer rises like a watchtower overlooking the Mediterranean. Built in the early 20th century, it traces the history of this resort destination once favored by wealthy holidaymakers. Successively a hotel-casino and then the subject of a tourism project in the 1970s, it was acquired in 1989 by the Conservatoire du Littoral.

This 1,200 m² ochre-colored building, characteristic of Provençal architecture, is currently undergoing restoration—particularly of its main structural elements—in parallel with the renaissance of Villa Rayol, now converted into an artists’ residence.

The underwater trail

Beyond the endless bucolic walks offered by the Domaine du Rayol and its Jardin des Méditerranées, the immediate proximity of the sea provides a spectacular summer experience. During the warm season, as cicadas fill the air and the gardens seem to pause, the Baie du Figuier becomes an ideal spot to explore marine life along an underwater trail.

Just a few meters from the shore, the rocky seabed reveals a rich underwater world: posidonia meadows, sea cucumbers, wrasses, and schools of salema porgies populate these crystal-clear waters.
